Overview
Renault Kwid is one of the most popular entry-level cars in India. Renault Kwid gets a very affordable price tag, but is designed and featured as the perfect combination of decent power and high mileage, much to the likeness of Indian roads. Dimensionally, Kwid is the largest of its rivals measuring 3679 mm long and 1579 mm wide. Moreover, 180 mm of ground clearance vouches for a better performance while on the go. Renault Kwid is available in petrol fuel type and comes in 12 different variants. The aggressive front profile is highlighted by C-shaped signature headlamps and bold structured front grille. Chunky fog lamp housings sit on the lower bumper. Renault Kwid is accessible in 5 different colours - Fiery Red, Ice Cool White, Moonlight Silver, Outback Bronze and Planet Grey.
Exterior
Renault Kwid has been designed to be bold and muscular in appearance. It has all the SUV-ish traits, like a butch bonnet, black cladding on the wheel arches and a bold stance. However, despite the extra bit of black cladding everywhere, the bumpers are body coloured. The body size is small and rides on 13-inch wheels. The Kwid base model gets black plastic claddings on the front chambered front grille and black colour ORVMs along with plastic door handles. However, the top-end variant gets additional chrome inserts in places like fog lamp surrounds and on the front grille. The door also gets chrome handles.
Interior
The interior of Kwid has been given a good fit and finish all around. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display is placed just at the right height. The infotainment cluster gets a Media NAV system. Kwid offers a comfortable space to passengers sitting in front. The dashboard and instrument cluster has been carved contemporarily. The cabin gets dual glove box and cup-holders along with other cubby holes for storage purpose. Unexpectedly, the cabin is spacious and has ample legroom and shoulder room for all the four occupants. However, Kwid has a shorter height, the seats are placed way lower. For tall occupants, the constant unnatural fold angle at the knee may be inconvenient during a long ride.
Performance
Renault has launched Kwid in petrol variants only with a choice of 800 cc and 1000 cc units. The low capacity 800 cc, petrol engine features three cylinders and 12 valves. Power and torque output for the 800 cc petrol engine is 54 PS at 5678 rpm and 72 Nm at 4386 rpm respectively. The 1.0 litre engine churns out 67 BHP and 91 Nm torque and has improved NVH levels that in turn offer better ride quality. Both the engines come mated to the conventional five-speed manual gearbox and five-speed AMT unit is available on the range topping variant featuring 1.0 litre engine.
The McPherson Strut and Twist Beam suspension on the front and rear wheels respectively form a greatly configured setting for bumpy cities and high roads. However, the car lacks grunt when you get on the highway or expressway. The 660 kg kerb weight is the lowest in the segment. Fuel economy is promising especially for a petrol powered vehicle. The AMT equipped 1.0 litre variant delivers 24.04 kmpl. Overall, the new 799 cc, three cylinder aluminium petrol engine yields decent performance by all standards. The 1.0 litre engine equipped with manual and AMT unit is tuned to deliver descent performance.
Safety and Security
Renault Kwid gets disc brakes on front wheels and drums at the rear. Other safety features include speed sensing door lock, engine immobilizer, child safety lock and seat belt warning. However, the car ranks mediocre in terms of safety as there are no ABS and EBD (electronic brake-force distribution). Driver airbag is offered as optional on the top-spec variant, fog lamps are provided in front only. Kwid also gets remote keyless entry with central locking. Other safety features on board are intermittent front wiper and auto wiping while washing, seat belts in front and rear and high mounted stop lamp among others. The base variant of the Kwid gets seat belt warning only, while the top-end variant gets a single airbag (driver only) and seat belt warning.
